Early Political Activity
Izak Berg began his political journey as a DA councillor in 2001, laying the foundation for what would become IRASA. By 18 May 2011, IRASA-backed candidates were already contesting ward elections in Ekurhuleni, demonstrating the organisation’s commitment to independent representation, accountable governance, and stronger community participation in local government.
National Registration and Growing Political Influence
What began as a community-focused ratepayers movement evolved into an organisation dedicated to local governance, civic participation, and independent representation. In 2019, IRASA achieved a major milestone when it became a nationally registered organisation with the IEC, expanding its ability to contest elections and represent communities across South Africa.
This growth reflected years of grassroots involvement and a commitment to accountable governance, financial responsibility, and community-driven decision-making. By 2021, IRASA was playing an active role in coalition governance in Ekurhuleni. During a period of political instability in many municipalities, its participation in a stable coalition demonstrated the organisation’s ability to work collaboratively while advocating for effective local government and meaningful community representation.
IRASA Contests the 2024 National Elections
Under the leadership of Izak Berg, Chairman of IRASA, the organisation continued its evolution from a community-based ratepayers movement into a nationally recognised non-political force. Building on years of grassroots activism, civic engagement, and local government participation, IRASA reached another important milestone by contesting the 2024 South African National and Provincial Elections.
This achievement reflected the organisation’s long-term commitment to providing citizens with an alternative model of representation focused on accountability, community involvement, and responsible governance. By entering the national electoral arena, IRASA expanded its mission beyond local issues, giving voters across South Africa the opportunity to support a movement rooted in independent thinking and direct community representation.
The 2024 elections marked a significant chapter in IRASA’s history, demonstrating its growth from a local civic initiative into a national political organisation dedicated to strengthening democracy and empowering communities throughout South Africa.
